Perhaps the most direct way to explore the collection is through the category named for the emotion it evokes. Love or Loss, or Hope and Courage—these labels go straight to the heart of what the sculptor had in mind as he created works that give artistic substance to the unfathomable depths of human emotion.

Understanding Identity Through Genres
Inspiratio 2018
Genre is the term that covers the overarching subject matter or core themes that form a “family” of works that have been created over time. These subject titles are descriptive and self-evident in the case of “Ballet” or “Mime” or “Mythology but take on a more nuanced character under the heading of “Joie De Vivre”. A particular lifelong interest might spark immediate curiosity about a genre: it is one way to approach the complexity of an array of work that springs from a lifetime of experience.

Connect to the Breadth of Work
Another way to approach the subject is through “medium”: what material form does this artwork take? Is it a painting, a drawing, or a sculpture? Most artists will experiment with different mediums over the course of their lives, but relatively few range from two to three-dimensional forms with equal facility and expressive capacity. Richard MacDonald has beautiful examples of work in a wide range of mediums, and this makes an interesting study of his character as an artist.
